Guest Lecture on 'Mergers and Acquisition in a Global Scenario' by Mr. Niranjan Chintam

The changing global scenario has focused the need for change in policies of our country. It was globalization when the economic liberalization took place in 1991 during the tenure of Prime Minister Narasimha Rao with the help of Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. That was a big time change which can be counted as the most significant change in the Indian economy. From 1991 until now there were lots of promising changes brought by Indian government, unfortunately most of them are still left as a drop of ink on papers. It seems as if government is sitting on policies there are much important to be implemented for the success of the business world.

A wide view in all this challenges of need in change of business world was discussed on Saturday morning. On 12th September, 2015, management students of IIT Roorkee had a wonderful opportunity to interact with one of the most important leader of corporate world, Mr. Niranjan Chintam – the Chairman & Co- Founder of Kellton Tech. With over 1000 member strong team, Mr. Niranjan Chintam led Kellton Tech to be the leading enterprise solution provider, serving the complete spectrum of IT needs. Under the leadership of Mr. Niranjan Chintam’s, Kellton tech was ranked 21st among all the companies 'The Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India 2014'. He nourished Kellton Tech from 2009 and diversified it by his strategies to reach this feat. His deep understanding of technical and financial aspects of the business world was shared with the students with the help of well descriptive slides. He has also created and implemented strategies for different Fortune 500 companies and Government agencies in both US and India. Mr. Niranjan Chintam has received his MBA from Wharton Business School and holds an engineering degree from India. Over his years of experience, Mr. Niranjan Chintam has received many honors and awards, which includes government technical achievements award, leadership award and sales awards for his service. He has a wide experience in the real life challenges in merger and acquisition of different companies as a serial entrepreneur.
Mr. Niranjan Chintam’s visit to the management department of IIT Roorkee was a great opportunity for the management students to know about the real life challenges of the business world. The topic chosen for the day was ‘Mergers and Acquisition in a Global Scenario’. Mr. Niranjan Chintam started with the current global scenario, showing the process included in reality check of the market. The current state of Indian economic scenario was widely discussed. A realization took place, which made one thing clear that the changes in Indian Economy – policies of the Government towards the business world needs a vast change to keep up with the global scenario. How can the ‘Make in India’ campaign can succeed when it takes years of paper work to set up a business? Our India as of now is one the fastest growing nation of the world, is still ranked below countries like Pakistan and Nepal in ease of business ranking. The Guest lecture on ‘Merger and Acquisition in Global Scenario’ had put us in shock to know that, it takes 28 steps to complete a merger of two companies in India, as compared to a four step process in US. And this is obviously a big challenge as this counts in all those reasons which have put India at 142th rank in Ease of Doing Business list.
Mr. Niranjan Chintam also gave a brief detail of his tenure in Kellton Tech and shared his experiences and challenges faced during entrepreneurship tenure. He also gave students a view on the dangling nature and future of E-commerce industries. Due diligence was explained deeply with examples of real world. Jiviteshpreet Singh Bawa
Trident Group

Trident Group is a USD 1 Billion Indian Business Conglomerate headquartered in Ludhiana (Punjab). The group operates in five major business segments: Yarn, Terry Towels, Paper, Chemical and Captive Power. Incorporated in 1990, the company continues to grow under the dynamic leadership of Chairman Mr. Rajinder Gupta: a first generation entrepreneur.

Internship experience at Trident was really exceptional. I got the opportunity to work with different people having experience in Sales, Marketing and Analytics. I was one of the 3 Research Interns that Trident hired from PAN India through their web portal. My Internship project was to identify strategies to increase market share of Trident Copier paper in Delhi NCR region. Working on Copier paper project gave me exposure to FMCG sector & Channel Sales via Distributor Retailer network. It was a great learning curve for me interning at Trident Group.

Internship Project learning's:
  •  Market sizing strategies & Sales data analysis to identify market share of Trident Copier Paper.
  • Sales Trend analysis to evaluate Market Potential of different locations & dealers of Delhi NCR.  Product Portfolio analysis, Competitor pricing & Packaging strategies.
  • Need-based & Behavioral Segmentation, Porter 5 Forces to evaluate segment attractiveness.
  • Product & Brand positioning based on Consumer & Dealer research.
I am glad that I got to work on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) system. TPM is a system of maintaining and improving the integrity of production and quality systems through processes that add value to the organization. I was involved in Quality competitive analysis vis-à-vis R&D parameters. Detailed analysis on TPM process for identifying bottlenecks in increasing market share of Trident Copier included the following:
  •  Fish Bone diagram analysis
  •  Why Why analysis
  •  Pareto analysis (80/20 rule)
Such in depth analysis helped me find insights about Copier paper market. Detailed analysis helped me define strategies for Sales, Distribution, Marketing, Branding and Packaging. I worked on Ansoff matrix to define strategies for Market Penetration, Product Development, Market Development and Diversification.
My project of identifying strategy to increase market share was appreciated by CMO – Mr. Naveet Jindal & my mentor Mr. Srikanth Markonda. They were pleased with the research and analysis done by me on the given subject. The strategies for increasing market share was categorized into the following:
  • Share of Preference
  • Share of Voice
  • Share of Distribution.

Hippocratic Oath for managers

The oath taken by doctors to fulfil their duty in any condition towards another life and humanity defines a framework that shapes their orientation towards society. We are living today in a very brittle state of economy and for that matter politics. Each and every day, managers who run the big corporations have to take decisions beneficial for their organizations. And in these times, the moral conduct expected by them may sometimes be put aside for the “higher good”, as they say. The point here is whether they should be forced to take Hippocratic Oath to instil in them a sense of morality towards others!

Hippocratic Oath as Wikipedia puts it is “one of the most widely known of Greek medical texts. It requires a new physician to swear upon a number of healing gods that he will uphold a number of professional ethical standards.” Generally taken by medical professional during convocation, this oath helps them to remember their duty towards society. In modern times, it has since changed a lot but the crux remains the same.

Vyan 2012

It was not an ordinary day for Dept of management Studies, IIT Roorkee. This was the day when DoMS conducted two national level competitions, Vicissitude and Evangelist. There was an aura of excitement in the department and the students were even more enthusiastic and thrilled about the occasion. The event saw a large number of participation from colleges across the nation for both contests. Everyone was equally good and it was a challenging job for the judges to choose the best among the best.

Finally the date arrived. It was 19th Nov 2012 when the finals of these two events were scheduled. There was so much excitement in the air that students reached the department before the time!! However apart from the events scheduled, something else was also in store. We were fortunate to listen to Mr. Devesh Singh, an eminent lawyer and a professor in IIFT Delhi. He walked us through the constitution of India, gave an insight of the judicial system of our country and also explained some well-known cases. He also talked about some of the contemporary issues. For management students it was indeed an interesting and satisfying experience to learn about something which is not our domain. The interaction was well received by the students and faculties alike.

The judges had arrived by then and it was the time to begin the show. First our department was introduced to the guests. Jury members were impressed by the diversity, the calibre and strength of our departments and student’s potential. The panel consisted of distinguished experts from industry and academia. All guests were welcomed by our Head of Department Dr. Rangnekar. After that each expert shared their journey and experiences with us. We were benefitted from knowing how these people thought and planned; what challenges they faced and how they overcame them. We also came to know about some of the major challenges faced while starting up a new venture. These suggestions and learning would surely increase our understanding and knowledge. Students were participative in the discussion and posed different set of questions which was answered skilfully by these experts.

After the sessions, the competition began. Vicissitude was scheduled first and then it was the turn for Evangelist. The stage was set and everyone was prepared to see the battle of the brains.

Vicissitude: Don’t Fear Predicament, Plan It

Vicissitude is a national level business plan competition, organized by DoMS, IIT Roorkee. It tests not only business skills but also the vision to see the future. The event saw national level participation and was a huge success. Entries were received from all India colleges. Finally a total of six teams were selected and called on for the final round of presentation. These six teams are listed below:

FMS_Jeevan
DoMS IIT Roorkee_Shabd Shiksha Sansthan
IIM Lucknow_Samaksh Kisaan
IIM Calcutta_Paradigm
Great Lakes_Enerture
IMI_Tilzmatic

Each team was allocated 20 minutes for presenting their entrepreneurial idea, showing their business acumen and queries & answers. As teams started coming and started giving their presentations, the excitement level begin to rise. Each was better than the rest and people were indecisive about a particular choice. The eureka moment came when our home team was called for showcasing their idea. There was huge appreciation and support all around and people were cheering up the teams. This presentation went off very well and even earned positive comments from judges. After all teams finished with their presentation, the lunch break was announced.

Evangelist: More than Just a Fairytale

After lunch it was the turn for another show Evangelist. It is a national level engineering project competition. It gives us a platform to mix technology with business i.e. how technology can be converted into a profitable venture. Like Vicissitude, this event also saw a huge participation across the nation. This event saw five finalists as mentioned below:

IITM Gwalior_XTECH
IIT Roorkee_Team Value Dales Stream Mapping
Ansal Institute_ Piezoelectric Roads
Ansal Institute_ Team Halo Aviators
Team Selcoth

Every team had 15 minutes for presenting their ideas along with question answer session. The teams were well prepared and it became really tough for the judges to decide. This event also had one home team from IIT Roorkee which received home audience support. The round also brought light on the bright future for India in technology and sciences. The potential to transform a technology or a scientific theorem into a real world application was acknowledged and received everyone including panel members.

After both events were over and it was the moment to announce the result. Not only participants but audiences were also having a sense of anticipation. Finally the envelopes were submitted after some half an hour discussion among judges. There was a pin drop silence and everybody was praying for his team.

First it was the turn of Vicissitude participants. The envelopes started to be opened and names begin to pour in. The atmosphere became electrifying when home team Shabd Shikha Sansthan was declared winner. It was another feather in the cap of DoMS cap and there was a sense of pride among the students. A huge round of applause was served for first and second runners which were Tilzmatic and Paradigm respectively.

After Vicissitude it was the time for Evangelist winner’s pronouncement and again silence crept into the atmosphere. It was an even more intense competition and no one was in a position to predict anything. The host started to name the winners. And again it was IIT Roorkee team which won the competition!! IITR has won both events and there was nothing more one could have asked for. It re-established the brand IITR in not only business but also in technology. Appreciation was given to the first runner up, Team halo Aviators. There was a tie between XTECH and Piezoelectric Roads for second runners up position.

However all teams were equally good and admired by the audiences. The event ended with congratulating all winners and a note of thanks delivered by our HoD Dr. Rangnekar. The judges again showed their admiration of DoMS student’s energy and participation. All of us were happy and feeling fortunate to be a part of this. The VYAN was over but the memory will always be there.

Exuberance 2011

Nobody is perfect, hence I may be imperfect but it is my team and it is the combination and synergy with us that makes my team Perfect.

Remembering the Titans

Management teaches us to compete, to excel and to emerge as winner. Exuberance - 2011, the annual sports meet of Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee ended last week in which second year emerged victorious. Least to say it was a tough competition between first year and second year students. Second year, also the winner of Exuberance – 2010 had the experience and the fresh faces of first year participated with infinite zeal and passion. Out of 200 points distributed among various sports, second year students were the first to cross 101 points.

Tournament started with an exciting match of football, which looked evenly poised most of the time, it was just four minutes before the closing time that second year scored two back-to-back goals. First year bounced back with a victory in Cricket match following day. Then was the time for the entry of female counterparts in tournament. First year girls outperformed second year girls in both Table Tennis singles and Badminton singles, however second year boys won these respective matches in boys leagues. First year students won TT men doubles. This was the time when second year got the much-required lead in Basketball and Volleyball.

After brawn in the field it was the turn of brain, first year defeated second year back to back in Chess, Carom and Pool. But as luck would have it at this moment of time second year students were standing up in the ladder with 105 points.

After 5 days of exciting competition, Exuberance was concluded with closing ceremony by Dr Z Rahman with Mr. Bharat Venishetti, an alumnus of DOMS, IIT Roorkee as the chief guest. The trophy went to second year students however the immense learning was the take away for all the participants. Vineet Chama from second year was awarded as best player of the tournament. Someone rightly said Moments do pass but Memories remain forever and these memories are imbibed in the mind of Domsonians.
