Day Two, a fine sunday started on an exhilarating note with Dr.Sanjeev Parashar, Professor, Marketing Management, from IMT Ghaziabad. He enthralled us with his energetic presentation on the advertisements, their targets and the impact on the target audience. He showed videos of some popular ads and explained the rationale behind their successes and failures. He also pointed out the subtle impact of colors used in ads.
Next session was taken over by Mr.A.Thotathri Raman, Chairman, Standards for Educational Advancement & Accreditation (SEAA) ,and Consulting Editor, Business India. He talked about functional integration in attaining goals with the example of a b-school. He considered the businesses of a b-school and gave a methodical flow of processes that constitute a b-school. He suggested ideas on how to go about the placements and how to approach the industry. Post lunch, Mr.Rakesh Kohli, CEO, Stag International took the centrestage and talked about the entrepreneurship and challenges faced by entrepreneurs. He himself being an entrepreneur, quoted many of his own experiences and the challenges he faced. His presentation was full of interesting anecdotes. He stressed that ethics and values are integral part of any enterprise. He also said that honesty and integrity of an individual will take him and his enterprise a long way ahead. The fourth speaker, was Ms Sudeshna Dutta EVP, Corporate Development at AbsolutData Research & Analytics. She gave an overview of market analytics and its implementation. AbsolutData, the company she co-founded analyses the data they collect from their clients and other sources to provide solutions. She spoke on how her company implements functional integration in market analytics in providing solutions and improving businesses.
The final lecture of the day and the symposium was given by Mr.Dinesh Jain CEO,ZEE Turner Ltd. He spoke on the paradox of compromise. He spoke about the practicalities of life and businesses. He spoke on how a manager should maintain a balance between all aspects of a business. He insisted on optimising all the constituent processes rather than maximising an individual expertise. He played a beautiful symphony to emphasize his point on how important it was to optimise all the components maintaining a harmony between them. His session ended with an interactive session where he answered queries ranging from his own personal experience to the media market.
Finally this mega event superbly organized by the students of DoMS IIT Roorkee under the aegis of our honourable Head of the Department, Prof. V.K.Nangia concluded on a happy note. The success of the event has motivated all the students to organize future events with more zeal and conviction.

Confluencia 2010 Day 1

The first speaker for the day and the Symposium was Mr.Madhukar Sharma, country manager at American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He gave us a wonderful insight on lean thinking and functional integration. He is currently consulting the Lohia Group and he told us that lean approach is being planned for the textile machinery used there by the waste elimination method. He insisted on optimising the processes in the production line to add value from the customer perspective. He also gave a live example of functional integration being applied at the Lohia Group's Plant.

The second speaker, Mr.Sanjay Gupta, MD, PNB Housing Finance Ltd., gave an elucidating lecture on Indian Retail Mortgage Market. He talked about the business environment, key inefficiencies of the market and the risk factors of the retail mortgage market. He suggested a part remedy in the form of Mortgage Guarantee. Mr.Sunil Aggarwal, freelance financial consultant and former vice president of IDBI bank was the third speaker. He enlightened the students with the concept of private equity. He gave a cost comparison with the conventional methods of raising capital. He discussed few risks and rewards associated with private equity. Fourth session of the day was taken over by Mr Vikrant Chaudhary, Country Manager, FSS Cluster (Software Group) at IBM. He gave a brilliant presentation with a video depicting integration of various services offered by IBM in singapore. He helped us understand how the technology can facilitate funtional integration in various businesses. He effectively talked us into the difference a technical advancement in any field can make and how that contributes to the national economy. Very enthralling was that session!
The gathering was then presided by Mr Manoj Sharma- Former industrialist and a self styled social entrepreneur. We were awed with the complete different perspective that we were asked to see - humanity and social conscience. It was altogether a different dimension we never experienced. The plight of the villagers who live in remote and interior parts of Uttarakhand state was vicariously felt by us. He gave an overview of his work he is doing in the remote villages of Uttarakhand. He wanted us to come up with a solution for the power management crisis he was facing in remote villages. He had actually set up micro-hydel power plants in those villages as river water was available but the problem was that the large amount of power was being unutilised as there was a meagre demand in those villages. Ltd and supervised by Dr Bhupinder Singh, Engineering Consultant and youth counsellor.Dr.Bhupinder Singh has implemented this project in Fazilka and was making efforts along with his team to introduce the novel cycle rickshaw in Roorkee and adjoining places. Along with the improvement in the design of the rickshaw, this project was aiming at improving the income of the poor Rickshawallah. The DoMS IITR has begun its journey of learning and celebration with its first mega event "CONFLUENCIA 2010". Confluencia is a National Level Symposium organized by DoMS IITR.
